Butterfly Bites

Ingredients

Stalks of celery
Twist pretzels
Pretzel pieces
Spreadable cheddar cheese or peanut butter
Raisins
100% Fruit juice

Directions

Wash celery and cut in half crosswise. Fill each celery piece with 1-tablespoon cheddar cheese or peanut butter. Add two pretzel twists for wings. Use pretzel pieces for antennae and raisins for decoration. Eat your butterfly before it files away! Serve with 1/2 cup juice.

Homemade Pop

Supplies

100% frozen concentrate juice(and flavor)
Carbonated water (amount required on juice can)
Small cups
Pitcher
Animal Crackers

Directions

Make frozen concentrate juice by the directions on can, substituting carbonated water for the regular water. Pour into cups and enjoy. Serving size 6 oz. Serve with 2-3 crackers.

Vegetables with Dip

Supplies

Crisp vegetables: choose from the following (carrots, broccoli, green or red peppers, zucchini strips or cauliflower)
Low-fat dressing (Ranch or French)
Pretzels

Directions

Serve vegetable strips with small amount (1-2 tablespoons) of dressing. Serve with pretzels.

Graham Cracker Deluxe

Supplies

Graham crackers
Peanut Butter
Soft fruit (banana, pear, peaches), cut in pieces
Butter knife

Directions

Spread a graham cracker square with a thin layer of peanut butter. On top of the peanut butter place a slice of banana, peach, pear or other soft fruit. Top with another graham cracker square spread with peanut butter (peanut butter facing inside). Serve with 1/3 cup of fruit.

Trail Mix

Supplies

Mixing bowls & spoons
Small paper or plastic cups
1 box square shaped cereal (Chex, Oatmeal Squares, Life)
1 box ring shaped cereal (Cheerios)
2 or 3 of the following – raisins, dried fruit, nuts (any variety), chocolate chips, M&M’s, mini-marshmallows, or Goldfish crackers
100% fruit juice

Directions

1. Place 1/2 box square cereal and 1/2 box ring cereal into a mixing bowl.
2. Then add 1/2 the total of other items that they chose to put in the snack.
3. Stir the mix with a mixing spoon.
4. Portion out a small amount of the mix into a paper cup for each person to snack on.
5. Serve with 6 oz. fruit juice.

Cheese Cubes and Crackers

Supplies

Small cubes of cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, or other kind of cheese and crackers.

Directions

Serve cheese and crackers together.

Participants jump in one at a time until everyone is in the rope. As they enter the rope, repeat ALL, ALL , ALL ... until the last person is in the rope. Say the chant and then the participants will exit on their birthday month.

School

For Kindergarten they run through the rope without jumping, first grade they jump once, and so on... If they miss as they are jumping, they have to start over at Kindergarten. Participants jump in the rope one at a time . They jump the number of times depending on what grade they are in. All participants start at Kindergarten followed by 1, 2, 3 ...

About the Program

Healthy Hopping is a series of 6-8 lessons that engages youth to increase their physical activity and eat healthy.

Each lesson contains a nutrition activity, jump rope skills, and preparation of a healthy snack.

Besides teaching nutrition and physical activity, the program provides the youth the opportunity to work together and practice achieving new skills.
